The Buhi Producers Cooperative, headed by their manager Mr. Florencio Bolanio, adopted the meat processing technology. From the training provided by CMU-ATBI on meat processing, they are now producing processed meat products such as embotido, longganisa, tapa, tocino, and siomai. These products are distributed to their partner cooperatives in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental, with 15,000 members. This gives Buhi a ready market for their products. Pork meat is the main raw material for meat processing. The cooperative has this arrangement in sourcing its raw material, which is also a form of its member’s livelihood program. The cooperative provides piglets to interested members who want to raise the pigs. The members will provide the pig pens and food until it grows and becomes ready to be slaughtered. The cooperative will then buy back the pigs and slaughter them for meat processing. However, because of the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the country, the cooperative has temporarily stopped the production of processed meat because of the unavailability and high price of pork meat. In addition, there are also restrictions in moving pork meat from one place to another. They will resume production once the raw materials become available and favorable again.
